THE AGES OF TIME
Age is just a number - but that number signifies experience. We have stages in life - childhood, adolescence, young adult, middle aged, retirement, and elderly. But we also have language to illustrate a particular age with usually a reflection on things like maturity and experience leve. Let’s take a look at age related words of time.
ADULTESCENT - a young adult or middle aged person who has the interests usually associated with teenagers
AIRLING - a young, thoughtless person
ANTIDILUVIAN - so extremely old as seeming to belong to an earlier period
CHILDE - a youth of noble birth
COEVAL - Someone roughly the same age as you.
CONSENESCERE - to grow old and grey together; to stay too long in an occupation, or to decay or fade
DOTAGE - mental infirmity as a consequence of old age; sometimes shown by foolish infatuations
Pantywaist - a timid man or boy considered childish or unassertive
ETERNELLEMENT JEUNES - French for “forever young.”
GERASCOPHOBIA - the fear of growing old
HIKIKIMORI - Japanese for a young adolescent who has withdrawn from life. They are obsessed with video games or the Internet and rarely leave their room
HOBBLEDEHOY - a clumsy or awkward youth, always uncertain
HOARY - gray or white from age
JUVENESCENT - being or becoming youthful or young
KALVERLIEFDE - two young, obsessive and infatuated people in love
MIDDLESCENCE - the middle-aged period of life, especially when considered a difficult time of self-doubt and readjustment
MOPPET - a young child
MUSIN - old or aged
NEANIMORPHIC - appearing younger than your actual age
NOACHIAN - ancient or antiquated
NOVELLUS - Latin for young or tender
PEG PUFF - a young woman with the manner of an old woman. Old Scots language.
PRECOCIOUS - showing mature qualities at an early age
PUERILE - displaying or suggesting a lack of maturity or the characteristic of a child
RANTIPOLE - a wild, reckless young person
RENASCENCE - a second or new birth
SENESCENCE - the state of being or becoming old
TANTENVERFUHRER - a young man with impeccable manners who you suspect has devious motives, “Aunt seducer.”
TORSCHLUSSPANIK - literally “gate closing panic,” the fear of diminishing opportunities as you age
VETUSTUS - Latin for ancient, old, or long established
YEALING - a person of the same age as you
Nostalgia for a Time Long Gone
The passage of time can cause nostalgia for events, people or circumstances long gone. You can be triggered by scents, visuals, interactions, conversations, holidays - anything can bring up memories to stimulate your emotions to feel fondness, wishful, sorrowful, melancholy or even anger. Here is a look at the words of time felt with nostalgia.
AAY’ HAN - the bittersweet perfect moment of mourning and joy; remembering those who are lost and gone right the time you are celebrating or having the time of your life.
ANEMOIA - a nostalgia for a time you’ve never known. Imagine stepping through the frame into a sepia-tinted haze, where you could sit on the side of the road and watch the locals passing by. Who lived and died before any of us arrived here, who sleep in some of the same houses we do, who look up at the same moon, who breathe the same air, feel the same blood in their veins—and live in a completely different world.
ATAVISTIC - relating back to feelings or ideas that people had in the distant past
DOR - a deep and nostalgic feeling of sadness, agony and emptiness experienced when you are missing, longing, or yearning for someone
FUUBUTSUSHI - Japanese for the things, feelings, or scents that evoke memories or anticipation of a particular season.
GJENSYNSGLEDE - the joy of meeting up with someone you haven’t seen in ages.
HALCYON - denoting a period of time in the past that was idyllically happy and peaceful
HIRAETH - a homesickness for a home to which you cannot return, a home which maybe never was. The nostalgia, the yearning, the grief for the lost places of your past.
LE TEMPS PASSE - French for “time flies”
MADELEINE - sometime that triggers memories or nostalgia
MORRINA - a very deep , nostalgic and melancholic homesickness as you long to return home.
NATSUKASHII - Japanese word meaning a small thing that brings you back in time. The memories are not of a wishful longing for what is over and done, but of an appreciation of the good ole’ days.
PRETERIST - one who has a chief interest in the past, reliving the past. They believe the prophecies of the Apocalypse to have already been fulfilled.
RETROUVAILLES - French for the happiness of meeting again after a long time.
SILLAGE - the scent that lingers in the air, a trail left in the water, the impression made in space after something or someone has gone, or the lingering trace of perfume after a woman is long gone.
SOUVENIRS D’ENFANCE - French for childhood memories
SUPERLUMINAL - traveling faster than the speed of light
ZEITGEIST - the spirit of the time; the spirit characteristic of an age or generation
