A BORING LIST
Of Boredom Words

The expression to be a bore means "to be tiresome or dull" and has been used in this manner since since 1768. The expression "boredom" means "state of being bored," and derived from the word ‘bore’ + -dom. It also takes the form as "bores as a class" (1883), "practice of being a bore" (1864) and “boreism.” (1833).

The word "bore" meaning a "thing which causes ennui or annoyance" has been in use since 1778. The noun "bore" comes from the verb "bore", which had the meaning "[to] be tiresome or dull" first used in 1768, with its meaning a possible figurative extension of "to move forward slowly and persistently, as a hole boring tool does." Bored yet?

The French term for boredom, ennui, is sometimes used in English since 1778. The term ennui was first used as a French word in English in the 1660s. The term ennui comes from the Old French ‘enui meaning “annoyance.” "The meaning also derives from the German word ‘langeweile’ which is a compound made of ‘lange’ meaning “long" and ‘weile’ meaning “while", which aligns with the common perception that when one is bored, time passes miserably slow.
