Defining and Understanding the Meaning of Attraction, Lust, Affection, Love, Sex
Love. We think about it, sing about it, dream about it, worry about it. When we don’t have it, we search for it; when we discover it, we don’t know what to do with it; and when we have it, we fear losing it. How to define it? Do we understand it?

WHAT IS LOVE?
Is it doodling his name in glitter all over your notebook, a bear hug from Dad and then a slice of Mom’s apple pie? Do you feel it the most from the jelly filled kisses from your toddler or the rush of relief at that same kid, sneaking in after curfew smelling like beer, but who is home, safe and alive? Is it staying up talking about the meaning of life, making love until the sun starts to rise and texting five minutes after leaving each other? Maybe it’s turning off Skype, jumping in the car and driving all night just to kiss her when you meet her for the first time after a year of just dreaming about it.
Is it just about the mind blowing sex you have in every room in the house, in the garage and the backyard? Does love fade when sex slowly goes down from being twice a day, to several times a week, to the standing date night, to just on your birthday or special occasions, to a quick cuddle before work or just a kiss goodnight? Do you settle into a comfortable and reliable love even when the sex long gone?
Is it the day that you marry him, or the one when she gives you a son? 30 years later and sitting together long after the kids have all gone? Do you still love him as strongly when his hair starts to go, then does it reignite when you both are retired and suddenly there is a second honeymoon in Paris and cruises every season, and all the new different things you have time now to do? As the golden years set in and you feel each ache and each pain, is the love starting to fade when she starts struggling to even remember your name. Is it the loving care that you give him when his body starts dying? And as she takes a very last breath, do you kiss her and whisper one last thing. Do you remind her that you will find her in the next life to come? Just like you have found her in every single one. Is she a love of a lifetime or is she your forever, an infinite love for all eternity, a soulmate and who will always be the one?
What is this thing called Love?
Humanity shares the universal capacity to feel love but the meaning of love is subjective and cannot be defined as one unified concept. What we can say is that it is a human emotion we are all capable of and it can be interpreted within the context of our personal and cultural beliefs. Generally speaking it is an emotion based on affection. Love is a subject extensively studied by academics across all disciplines with references that date back to ancient texts and drawings. Love transcends time.
Love. We think about it, sing about it, dream about it, lose sleep worrying about it. When we don’t have it, we search for it; when we discover it, we don’t know what to do with it; and when we have it, we fear losing it.
How do we define it?
Can we ever really understand it?
What about attraction, passion, lust, infatuation, obsession, intimacy and kinky sex?
And the age old question...do soulmates exist?
WHAT IS LOVE?
Think of your first love. Remember the rush of endorphins, the surge of excitement and the butterflies in your stomach that made you weak in the knees? Now think further back to when you were a young child. Remember the feeling of safety from the hugs and the kisses from your mother. Feel the rush of happiness every day to see Daddy coming through the door. Finally, think back to the moment you held your newborn. It’s an immense feeling that is indescribable and there is nothing that can even compare to it because it is unconditional love.
Love encompasses a range of strong and positive emotional and mental states. It could be caring, trusted and comfortable, a passionate romance, nurturing and maternal or a deep affection. Or it could be something you can’t define. At its core love refers to a feeling of strong attraction and emotional attachment. There are many theories surrounding this concept we will explore here.
Love can be considered to be a positive and negative. The good manifests in human kindness, compassion, loyalty, affection and concern for the good of another.
