CAUSALITY
BASICS OF CAUSE & EFFECT
CAUSALITY - also referred to as CAUSATION or CAUSE and EFFECT is efficacy, by which one event, process or state (cause) contributes to the production of another event, process or state (effect). It is a metaphysical concept.
The cause is partly responsible for the effect, and the effect is partly dependent on the cause.
In general, a process has many causes, which are also said to be causal factors for it, and all lie in its past. An effect can in turn be a cause of, or causal factor for, many other effects, which all lie in its future. Some writers have held that causality is metaphysically prior to notions of time and space. The concept is like those of agency and efficacy. A leap of intuition may be needed to grasp it. Causality is implicit in the logic and structure of ordinary language.
Causality is an abstraction that indicates how the world progresses. Abstraction is a conceptual process where general rules and concepts are derived from the usage and classification of specific examples, literal ("real" or "concrete") signifiers, first principles, or other methods.
In Aristotelian philosophy the word "cause" means "explanation" or answer to the question why.Aristotle categorized the four types of answers as material, formal, efficient, and final "causes". The "cause" is the explanation and failure to recognize that different kinds of "cause" are being considered can lead to debate.
- The deterministic world-view holds that the history of the universe can be represented as a progression of events following one after as cause and effect.
- The incompatibilist version of this holds that there is no such thing as "free will".
Compatibilism holds that determinism is compatible with, or even necessary for, free will.
In the opposition to rationalism, pure reason alone cannot prove the reality of efficient causality; all human knowledge derives solely from experience.
