CREATION OF THE COSMOS
Plato argues that in the creation of the universe, there is a uniting of opposing elements; intellect (nous) and necessity (ananke). The cosmos (ordered world) was born from chaos (nothing) and is of a mixed birth. It is the offspring of a union of necessity and intellect. Intellect prevails over necessity by Peitho, goddess of persuasion, to direct life towards what is best. The result of this was the initial formation of the universe. According to the Orphic tradition, the start of the cosmos began with Hydros (water), from which the muddy form of Gaia (earth) was formed, and then Thesis (Creation). Our story begins in the newly formed Cosmos and with the births of our conspiring deities.

The Goddess Ananke

Ananke is the goddess or personification of inevitability, compulsion and necessity and is placed as a Protogenoi in the Greek pantheon so she is one of the primordial deities of Ancient Greece. She was usually depicted as a serpentine goddess with outstretched arms around the universe. She carries a spindle (spindles normally represent spinning the thread for the tapestries of fate). Ananke, derived from the common Ancient Greek noun ἀνάγκη means "force, constraint or necessity,” Ananke is the core of this story and is intertwined with all the deities.

Ananke was born from the union of Hydros and Gaia. In the Orphic cosmogony she emerged self-formed at the dawn of creation - an incorporeal, serpentine being whose outstretched arms encompassed the breadth of the cosmos. The births of Ananke and her brother and consort (husband), Chronos (personification of chronological or unending time itself ) were thought to mark the division between the eon of Chaos (nothing) and the beginning of the Cosmos (order).

Ananke is considered the most powerful dictator of fate and circumstance; mortals as well as gods respected her power. Ananke represents an inevitable decision. Not fate but something that needed to be done to accomplish a specific goal. No one can stop her, and no one has the desire to. Heroditus says that she brings good fortune. Ananke is extremely wise and teaches others to appreciate the things they already have. In some stories she’s described as chaos, and the basis of the human heart itself. She represents love, chaos, fate and all the insanity that goes along with it.

She appears often in poetry, as Simonides says, “even the gods don’t fight against Ananke". She is also frequently associated with Aphrodite, the goddess of abstract, celestial love and Eros, the god of passionate love, both of which are to be considered the powers that dictated the course of our lives. All three are strong influences in this story.

Ananke is featured in Victor Hugo's novel Notre-Dame of Paris as the symbol of passionate love. He believed that we are driven by necessity and it is necessary for us to believe, create, and live. But we have to deal with obstacles in the way that take form as superstition, prejudice, and the elements. The mysterious difficulty of life springs from the dogmas, laws, and from all things. But within these three concepts is the human heart.

UNION OF ANANKE AND CHRONOS
Chronos, the personification of time and the consort of Ananke, represents chronological, linear time. As in the “arrow of time” that moves in one direction. Chronos is represented as an old man with a sickle (later called Father Time)- he is the reaper of all harvests, and in time he cuts down all things. He was known to form the shape of a three-headed serpent. He is key to progression. Chronos is the entirety of the span between the Alpha, or the beginning and the Omega, or the end. Bearer of the clock of eternity, rimmed by signs of the Zodiac, he is the keeper of time, he counts every tick of the second hand and prevents interference with that essential forward momentum.

Ananke and Chronos, together with their serpentine coils entwined, crushed (hatched) the primal egg of creation splitting it into its constituent parts of earth, heaven and sea to form the ordered universe. After their act of creation, Ananke and Chronos encircled the cosmos to drive the rotation of the heavens and the eternal passage of time.

Ananke and Chronos call on others for help
  • The Fates - weavers of the hands of fate
  • Eros - god of love and passionate sexual desire
  • Aphrodite - goddess of love, passion, beauty, pleasure
  • Kairos - god of opportune time

THE FATES
Fates were personified as three very old women who spin the threads of human destiny. They were the daughters of Zeus and Themis. Another interpretation is presented by Plato in his Republic 617c. He writes that the Fates (the Moirae) were the daughters of Ananke. This is a logical assumption considering the close relationship between the concepts of necessity and purpose with the concept of fate. Ananke is thought to be the only being to influence the Fates’ decisions.
  • LACHESIS - allotter, she is the measurer of each thread of life.
  • CLOTHO - a spinner, she spins the thread of human life.
  • ATROPOS - inflexible, she cuts the thread of life, thus determining the individual’s moment of death).

EROS THE GOD OF LOVE
Eros (the god of love) has varying origins but is generally thought to be the fourth god to come into existence, coming after Chaos, Gaia (the Earth), and Tartarus (the abyss). One interpretation is found in the Orphic and Eleusinian Mysteries and featured Eros as an original god who was the child of Night (Nyx). Aristophanes influenced by Orphism, relates the birth of Eros:

At the beginning there was only Chaos, Night (Nyx), Darkness (Erebus), and the Abyss (Tartarus). Earth, the Air and Heaven had no existence. Firstly, blackwinged Night laid a germless egg in the bosom of the infinite deeps of Darkness, and from this, after the revolution of long ages, sprang the graceful Love (Eros) with his glittering golden wings, swift as the whirlwinds of the tempest. He mated in the deep Abyss with dark Chaos, winged like himself, and thus hatched forth our race, which was the first to see the light.

In later myths, he was the son of Aphrodite and Ares: it is the Eros of these later myths who is one of the erotes, a group of winged love gods. This origin is key to our story. Eros was depicted as often carrying a lyre or bow and arrow. His Roman counterpart is Cupid. His hands are all over our story as the instigator of attraction, the driver of lust and the influence over love. His mother, Aphrodite, is his partner and together they are the wingmen assisting in desire and the dance of seduction.

APHRODITE
Aphrodite is an ancient Greek goddess associated with love, beauty, pleasure, passion and procreation. Her influence is ensuring the pleasures of the flesh are strong in order to to drive the chemical connection needed for bonding. Her role as Aphrodite Pandemos, Aphrodite was associated with Peithō (persuasion) and could be prayed to for help in seduction. This connects her to Ananke and together they conspire in their acts of persuasion. Aphrodite is the goddess of procreation and this influence is instrumental in progression of life in the human experience. It illustrates the concept of eternity in a more realistic way by demonstrating the continuation of their essence or spark of love past the elusive death. Life after death cannot be proved either way and any answers to soulmates must address this point.
THE FINAL TIMEPIECE
The only question remains is one of time. Let’s meet my pen name namesake, Kairos. He is the brother of Abake’s lover, Chronos. Kairos, the youngest child of Zeus, is the god of opportunity or opportune time and together with Chronos, the god of chronological time, represent both distinctly different - but necessary - concepts of time. Kairos, is the perfect and optimal time. He is, for Aristotle, the time and space in which the “proof will be delivered through words or actions.”

THE KAIROS MOMENT
A Kairos moment can be defined as the moment of time all conditions are right for the accomplishment of a crucial action; the opportune and decisive moment. A Kairos moment is the opportune time for soulmates to meet under the cosmos as directed by Eros and necessitated by Ananke.
  • Chronos gives the lovers the chronological time they need to find each other.
  • Kairos forms the opportune time to make the meeting happen.
  • The unknown factor is FREE WILL

UNITED FORCES OF LOVE
Conspiring to Tie the Bond

Love is the Prize

Love is the most ancient of the gods, the most honored, and the most powerful. Sigmund Freud in ‘Civilization and Its Discontents’ theorized that the vital process of life is an experience under the influence of Eros but instigated by Ananke. This experience is one that unites separate individuals and binds them together with ties from the cosmos. The ancients viewed all that is human and all that is revered as divine as relative and transient.

Only Fate, (Eimarmene) the universal Necessity (Ananke) and the inevitable Destiny (Adrasteia)
are absolute. There is no other.

It is the indestructible force of love that is the absolute law of Fate. Ananke, working in unison with Chronos, is fueled by the powers of the cosmos and a luminous starlight, destiny is weaved by the looms of Fate, the persuasion of love is guaranteed by the power of Eros, the winged acolyte of Aphrodite, the beauty of seduction influence ensured by the goddess herself, and all conspire to form the most passionate and ultimate form of love made possible by the cosmic laws of fate and destiny. This love is known to us as SOULMATES.

To bring soulmates together it is directed by Eros and necessitated by Ananke. The soulmates have been given the gift of time from Chronos. It has been destined by the Fates. But when the Kairos moment comes it is now the crucial time for action. Kairos is not absolute and the meeting is never guaranteed. This is because people have free will and it is up to them to take action or not. People are merely influenced by the gods as they do not interfere with free will. But all hope is never lost if soulmates don’t take action and miss each other. Chronos - unending time - assures them more time to find each other. Kairos offers more opportunities and this is because soulmates are the answer to the question of what is meant to be.

Soulmates by Starlight

I knew you and you knew me
And we fell in love with just our minds
We undressed our consciences
Sensually caressing our imaginations
And made love to each other’s thoughts
Chemistry poured out of our minds
And the essence flowed in our words
And when we connected our minds
We eternally bonded our very souls

It was destined by the spinning stars
Of a cosmos that conspired to join us
Under the influences of the gods
Spun from the looms of the Fates
The ticking of time made by Chronos, or known as FatherTime
And the right moment was molded by Kairos;
a moment made perfect by his gift of the right, opportune time
Attraction was compelled by Ananke
Aphrodite sparked the flames of desire
And passion and lust were directed by Eros, the god of passionate love

Their influences were heavy, but
could only guide us from above
Like all humans we are governed
by the concept of free will
We are given the freedom of choice
But have to take the right actions
Make the choices we thought were right
And after we realized our true fate
We wrote destiny in the stars above
And spun from the burning beams of light
Burning cosmic energies sealed our fate We felt it flooding us with a golden purity
And the twinkling string of starlight
Tied us together and bonded our hearts for eternity

There are no questions by soulmates
Asking the how, where, what, when or why
We knew the answers then, now, and forever,
It was the the gods who set the stage
And then waited for our song
The filled the audience with the world
And from their seats in the cosmos
They watched us take center stage
And we sang our song together
In the harmonious glow of our bond
Made from the scintillating rays of starlight
