OBSCURANTISM is a word that comes to us from the word obscure. Obscure means to make things less visible or clear. It is making things hazy. And obscurantism is a policy of opposition to enlightenment or the spread of knowledge, that is to make knowledge obscure. We can say it is the practice of making things obscure.
Dictionary definition for obscurantism:
1. Opposition to the increase and spread of knowledge. (noun)
2. Deliberate obscurity or evasion of clarity. (noun)
ABSTRUSE - difficult to comprehend
ADIANOETA - an expression that carries both an obvious meaning and a second, subtler meaning.
ARCANE - known or knowable only to a few people
AMBIGUOUS - doubtful or uncertain especially from obscurity or indistinctness. Inexplicable or capable of being understood in two or more possible senses or ways
AMPHIBOLY - a situation where a sentence may be interpreted in more than one way due to ambiguous sentence structure.
CIRCUMLOCUTORY - having a covert or obscure meaning
CLEDONISM - circumlocution used to avoid speaking unlucky words
CRYPTIC - having or seeming to have a hidden or ambiguous meaning
DOUBLE EDGED - capable of being taken in two ways
HERMETIC - relating to or characterized by subjects that are mysterious and difficult to understand : relating to or characterized by occultism or abstruseness
INEFFABLE - to great to be expressed in words

ELLIPTICAL - of or relating to deliberate obscurity (as of literary or conversational style
ENIGMATIC - something hard to understand or explain
EQUIVOCAL - subject to two or more interpretations and usually used to mislead or confuse
POLYSEME - a word or phrase with different, but related senses.
- POLYSEMY - having more than one meaning
RECONDITE - adjective that basically means hard for the average mind to understand. Difficult to penetrate; incomprehensible to one of ordinary understanding or knowledge. In the same family as "abstruse," "esoteric" recondite is a very serious word that you could use to describe obscure philosophy books or high level mathematical theory.
