FEELINGS YOU HAVE BUT CAN’T DEFINE

Feelings You Have No Name For
Do you ever feel something that you can’t explain and struggle endlessly grasping for the right word that describes it? The feeling can’t be broken down into the core emotions like anger, grief, sadness or fear. Because those emotions are felt physically we are aware of what they mean and how they affect you. Your experiences mean you can define what fear feels like to you or how happiness makes you feel. But what about feelings? Emotions and feelings are different.
So how can we talk about them?
WITH WORDS.
WORDS ARE POWERFUL TOOLS
They drive our thoughts and our thoughts drive our conversations and interactions with both ourselves and with the world around us. Words can be both positive or negative and they can empower us, or they can bring us down. You probably have many negative words in your vocabulary that are triggered by painful emotions, low self-esteem and intrusive thoughts and memories. What you need to do is mindfully accept these words for what they are but do not allow them power over you. Use the techniques in this book to gently push these words and their associated thoughts away and then introduce new words in their place.
Identifying Your Feelings
What if your feelings seem like they can’t be linked to a known emotion? What if you think hard about it and you can’t identify what it is because you are numbed by it and not experiencing the physical manifestation of emotion? You know with fear you tremble and shake and can’t breathe. You know that when you are angry your blood pressure surges and you feel out of control. Numbness may dull your senses so you can’t identify what exactly it is you are feeling. This creates confusion. In reflecting on it you may sometimes come close to putting a name to it, but even then the name doesn’t quite feel right. Not being able to define your feelings because they seem so abstract can make you feel like you are the only one who feels this way. But you are not alone. The Internet can relate and the process of sharing information and communicating is how we know that what we are feeling is recognized in some way by others.
Obscure feelings routinely swell from within us, and they aren't easily named. Phobias are irrational so they may come with feelings you can’t name. It is important to stop, examine them, and try to put them into words. When we label a feeling, it might make it more manageable. It might not change the underlying emotion, but it does allow us the possibility of choosing how we respond. Wouldn’t you feel better if you could name your feeling? Then maybe you can calm a panic attack better.
Feelings are not black and white. They are often blends of a lot of different colors representing what you're experiencing. These can be defined as mixed feelings and we can’t accurately measure a subjective feeling much less a subjective concept like this. We can, however, break it down into core elements or into one of the nine distinct human emotions: anger, disgust, envy, fear, happiness, lust, pride, sadness, and shame.
Once we identify the main elements we can think about how we can best deal with each part. Sometimes the best we can do is capture the moment, process what we can and then work on easing the impact of each feeling. But if we can put a name to it, then we can accept it and see that we are not alone in feeling it.
Once have thought about your feelings, or even named them, you can do something about them. You might make a change in your life, so that you don't experience such an intense complexity as s easily. Or you can identify them better and you can work on your triggers so you can cope with them. With time and effort, you can come to accept them and be able to simply sit quietly with it without fear or judgement.
