DIVONE INTERVENTION
PROPHECY
A prophecy is a message that is claimed by a prophet to have been communicated to them by a deity. Such messages typically involve inspiration, interpretation, or revelation of divine will concerning the prophet's social world and events to come (compare to divine knowledge).
The English noun "prophecy", in the sense of "function of a prophet" first appeared about 1225, from the Old French ‘profecie’ and from the Greek ‘propheteia’ meaning “gift of interpreting the will of God.” The related meaning, "something spoken or written by a prophet", dates from c. 1300, while the verb "to prophesy" was first recorded in 1377.
ESOTERIC PROPHECY
Esoteric prophecy was established by Nostradamus. He claimed to be a converted Christian and was persecuted to some degree for his cryptic esoteric writings about the future, reportedly derived through a use of a crystal ball.
Nostradamus was a French apothecary and reputed seer who published collections of foreknowledge of future events in his book Les Propheties (The Prophecies), published in 1555.
Nostradamus has attracted an esoteric following that credits him with foreseeing world events. Most reliable academic sources maintain that the associations made between world events and Nostradamus's prophecies are the result of misinterpretations or mistranslations (sometimes deliberate) or are so tenuous as to render them useless as any real evidence of genuine predictive power.
DIVINE PROVIDENCE
Divine Providence is in theology, God's intervention in the Universe. The term Divine Providence (usually capitalized) is also used as a title of God. A distinction is usually made between "general providence", which refers to God's continuous upholding of the existence and natural order of the Universe, and "special providence", which refers to God's extraordinary intervention in the life of people. Miracles generally fall in the latter category.
VOCABULARY
DIVINE - the concept of divinity and the word ‘divine’ evolved in the late 14th century to mean "pertaining to, in the nature of or proceeding from God or a god". This came from the Old French ‘devin’, and from the Latin ‘divinus’ meaning "of a god", in turn from ‘divus’ with similar meaning, which was related the Latin ‘deus’ meaning god or deity.
PROVIDENCE - comes from Latin ‘providentia’ meaning “foresight or prudence” and that in turn from ‘pro-, ahead’ and ‘videre’ meaning “to see.” The current use of the word in the secular sense refers to foresight, or "timely preparation for eventualities", or (if one is a deist or an atheist) "nature as providing protective care".
QADAR قدر - an Arabic word meaning "fate, divine fore-ordainment, or predestination," but literally meaning "power.” It is the concept of DIVINE DESTINY in Islam.
- PREDESTINATION is the rendering of a belief that Muslims call ‘al-qaḍāʾ wa l-qadar’ القضاء والقدر). This phrase means "the divine decree and the predestination.” ‘Al-qadr’ literally means "divine power" and derives from the root Q-D-R meaning “to measure out, to calculate, to be able, to have power.”
- DIVINE DESTINY - Muslims believe that divine destiny is when God wrote down in the Preserved Tablet (al-lawh al-mahfooz) all that has happened and all that will happen, it will come to pass as written. According to this belief, a person's action is not caused by what is written in the preserved tablet, but rather the action is written in the tablet because God already knows all occurrences without the restrictions of time.
ROLE OF IMMORTALITY
IMMORTALITY is eternal life, being exempt from death; unending existence. The belief in an afterlife is a fundamental tenet of most religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Islam, Judaism, and the Bahá'í Faith; however, the concept of an immortal soul is not. The "soul" itself has different meanings and is not used in the same way in different religions and different denominations of a religion.
RELIGIOUS PATHS TO IMMORTALITY
GREEK - Immortality in the ancient Greek religion originally always included an eternal union of body and soul as seen in Homer, Hesiod, and various other ancient texts. The soul was considered to have an eternal existence in Hades, but without the body the soul was considered dead. Almost everyone becomes a disembodied dead soul although a number of men and women were considered to have gained physical immortality and been brought to live forever in either Elysium, the Islands of the Blessed, heaven, the ocean or literally right under the ground.
BUDDHISM - According to one Tibetan Buddhist teaching, Dzogchen, individuals can transform the physical body into an immortal body of light called the rainbow body.
CHRISTIAN - Christian theology states that Adam and Eve lost physical immortality for themselves and all their descendants in the Fall of Man. Christians who profess the Nicene Creed believe that every dead person (whether they believed in Christ or not) will be resurrected from the dead at the Second Coming, and this belief is known as Universal Resurrection.
HINDU - Hindus believe in an immortal soul which is reincarnated after death. People repeat a process of life, death, and rebirth in a cycle called samsara. If they live their life well, their karma improves and their station in the next life will be higher, and conversely lower if they live their life poorly. After many life times of perfecting its karma, the soul is freed from the cycle and lives in perpetual bliss. There is no place of eternal torment in Hinduism, although if a soul consistently lives very evil lives, it could work its way down to the very bottom of the cycle.
TAOISM - It is repeatedly stated in the Lüshi Chunqiu that death is unavoidable. In the Tractate of Actions and their Retributions, a traditional teaching, spiritual immortality can be rewarded to people who do a certain amount of good deeds and live a simple, pure life. Spiritual immortality in this definition allows the soul to leave the earthly realms of afterlife and go to pure realms in the Taoist cosmology.
HEBREW - there is little or no clear reference to immortality or to resurrection from the dead in the Dead Sea scrolls texts.
ZOROASTRIAN - Zoroastrians believe that on the fourth day after death, the human soul leaves the body and the body remains as an empty shell. Souls would go to either heaven or hell.
VOCABULARY
- ADAMANTINE - something unbreakable; from a metal that was inpenetrable.
- AMARANTHINE - undying, immortal. Eternally beautiful. The name is rooted in the Greek word ‘amarantos’ meaning "immortal" or "unfading," and ‘amarantus’ the Latin name of a flower (Celosia cristata). The word amaranthine emerged as an adjective of the imaginary flower and subsequently of anything possessing its undying quality.
- INDISSOLUBLE - unable to be destroyed; lasting.
