​FEATURE; TRANSLATING THE UNTRANSLATABLE - this feature is a huge dictionary of untranslatable words or words from other language that don’t easily translate into English.

​ABENDROT - the color of the sky when the sun is setting.

BACKPFEIFENGESICT - an untranslatable word (no translation in English) & hard to pronounce but it means a face that wants to be punched.

DAS FERNWEH - describes the yearning for foreign lands, the desire to travel. This word is the counterpart to Heimweh, which means homesickness. Fernweh therefore describes a kind of homesickness for places you’ve never been to.

DIE SCHNAPSIDEE - describes the kind of idea that seems brilliant after a couple of drinks and in the morning — if acted upon — may lead to ridicule, shame and self-reproach.

ERKLÄRUNGSNOT – The urgent need to explain something, either yourself or the situation. It can also mean to struggle explaining something. Erklärungsnot is made up of the German words Erklärung (‘explanation’) and not (in this case, can be translated as ‘need.’)

EUDAIMONIA - often translated as ‘happiness’, it really means the deepest kind of fulfillment, often comprising a flourishing work and love life. It’s accepted that eudaimonia can go hand in hand with lots of day-to-day frustration and pain.

EXTRAWUNSCH - used to denote someone who is slowing things down by being fussy. It means an additional request which turns a simple delivery/operation/undertaking into a complicated one, often with only a marginal benefit and a sense of it being an unnecessary complication.

FACHIDIOT – literally means ‘subject-idiot’. A fachidiot is a person with expert knowledge in their own field and are well-accomplished but are clueless when it comes to anything outside that area.

FAHRVERGNÜGEN – The love of simply driving. (German

FEIERABEND - literally "evening celebration"; the festive mood that can arrive at the end of a working day.

FENSTERLN – When you have to climb through someone’s window in order to have sex with them without their parents knowing about it.

FERNWEH – Feeling homesick for a place you have never been to.

FINGERSPITZENGEFUHL - literally meaning "fingertips feeling" and meaning intuitive flair or instinct, which has been adopted by the English language as a loanword. It describes a great situational awareness, and the ability to respond most appropriately and tactfully. It can also be applied to diplomats, bearers of bad news, or to describe a superior ability to respond to an escalated situation. The term is sometimes used to describe the instinctive play of certain football players.

FISSELIG – This represents a temporary state of sloppiness, usually elicited by a person’s nagging. This often means that a person is flustered to the point of incompetence.

FREMDSCHÄMEN - the almost-horror you feel when you notice that somebody is oblivious to how embarrassing they truly are.

FRÜHJAHRSMÜDIGKEIT - Frühjahr is "springtime," while Müdigkeit means "tiredness." Together, it refers to a sort of reverse seasonal affective disorder—when people are depressed or lethargic at the onset of spring.

GEIST - a German noun with a degree of importance in German philosophy. Its semantic field corresponds to English ghost, spirit, mind, intellect. Some English translators resort to using "spirit/mind" or "spirit (mind)" to help convey the meaning of the term.

GEMÜTLICHKEIT - literally, it means a 'cozy, friendly, or nice atmosphere', but can also connote time spent with loved ones, the fact of seeing a friend after a long absence, the friendliness or chattiness of a specific person, or a general sense of togetherness.

GRETCHENFRAGE - A question designed specifically to find out someone’s real intentions.

HANDSCHUHSCHNEEBALLWERFER – A coward willing to criticize and abuse from a safe distance.

HONIGKUCHENPFERD - Taken literally, this word means “horse-shaped honey cake.” But it’s a turn of phrase, somewhat equivalent to the English idiom “grinning like a Cheshire cat.” It’s talking about a big grin the wearer just can’t wipe off of their face.

KABELSALAT - tangled up cables; literally a “cable-salad"

KOPFKINO - imagining scenarios vividly; head cinema.

KORINTHENKACKER - an insult to describe an anal-retentive person who obsesses over small, petty things. It translates to “raisin-pooper.”

KUMMERSPECK -Weight gained from emotional eating, often the result of heartbreak.

LEBENSMÜDE - translates as "life-tired" and either means you do such risky things that you clearly don't care for your own safety, or that you've entered a deep, physical state of not-caring.

MUTTERSEELINALLEIN - Loneliness, but much harder-hitting than that: it's meant to evoke abandonment by everybody you love, and literally means that your mother's soul has left you.

RUCKKEHHRUNRUHE - The feeling of returning home after an immersive trip only to find it fading rapidly from your awareness.

SEHMSUCHT - a "longing", "desire", "yearning", or "craving". Some psychologists use the word Sehnsucht to represent thoughts and feelings about all facets of life that are unfinished or imperfect, paired with a yearning for ideal alternative experiences.

SPRACHGEFÜHL - the character of a language: An intuitive sense of what is linguistically appropriate. It was borrowed from the German language at the end of the 19th century and combines two German nouns, ‘Sprache’, meaning "language, speech," and ‘Gefühl’ meaning "feeling."

TREPPENWITZ – describes all the things you should have said in the heat of the moment but only think of when it is too late. Also known as, the best comeback line you never said.
