MYTHOLOGY OF TIME

Time is a common theme in mythology along with its relational concepts of fate and destiny.
Here are a few gods, goddesses and personifications that’s may be familiar to you.

GREEK MYTHOLOGY
  • AION (Αἰών) is a Hellenistic deity associated with time, the orb or circle encompassing the universe, and the zodiac. The "time" represented by Aion is unbound.
  • CHRONOS (Χρόνος) is the personification of chronological time. He is referenced frequently with Kairos (see below).
  • HEIMARMENE (or Himarmene) (Εἱμαρμένη) is a goddess of fate/destiny in Greek mythology (in particular, the orderly succession of cause and effect or the fate of the universe as a whole. She is aligned with a family of similar beings of destiny and fate (such as Aesa, Moira, Moros, Ananke, Adrasteia and Pepromene).
  • THE HORAE or HOURS (Ὧραι, Hōrai) were the goddesses of the seasons and the natural portions of time.
  • KAIROS (καιρός) is the personification of the the right, critical, or opportune moment. The ancient Greeks had two words for time: CHRONOS (χρόνος) and KAIROS. Chronos refers to chronological or sequential time, while Kairos signifies a proper or opportune time for action. While Chronos is quantitative, Kairos has a qualitative, permanent nature
  • THE MOIRAI (Μοῖραι) are often known in English as the Fates. Moirae or Mœræ (obsolete), were the white-robed incarnations of destiny. ATROPOS was the oldest of the Three Fates, and was known as "the Inflexible One," or "inevitable.” It was Atropos who chose the mechanism of death and ended the life of mortals by cutting their threads. Her sister CLOTHO spun the thread of human life (she also made major decisions, such as when a person was born, thus in effect controlling people's lives). And her other sister, LACHESIS measured the length. Lachesis decided how much time in life allowed for each person or being. She is also said to choose a person's destiny after a thread was measured.
  • MOROS - (Μόρος) is the being of impending doom who drives mortals to their deadly fate.

IN ROMAN MYTHOLOGY
  • AETERNITAS was the divine personification of eternity. She was particularly associated with Imperial cult as a virtue.
  • ANNA PERENNA - an old Roman deity of the circle or "ring" of the year.. Her festival fell on the Ides of March (March 15), which would have marked the first full moon in the year in the old lunar Roman calendar when March was reckoned as the first month of the year.
  • ANTEVORTA- was a goddess of the future, also known as PORRIMA. She and her sister POSTVERTA were described as companions or siblings of the goddess CARMENTA, sometimes referred to as "the Carmentae". They may have originally been two aspects of Carmenta, namely those of her knowledge of the future and the past (compare the two-faced Janus).
  • JANUS - is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past.
  • THE PARCAE (singular, Parca) were the female personifications of destiny who directed the lives (and deaths) of humans and gods. They are often called the FATES in English, and their Greek equivalent were the MOIRAI. NONA and DECIMA were responsible for birth, while MORTA was charged with overseeing death. They distributed to mankind all the good and bad things in life.
  • VERTUMNUS is the god of seasons, change and plant growth, as well as gardens and fruit trees.

FATHER TIME is the personification of time. In recent times he is usually depicted as an elderly bearded man, sometimes with wings, dressed in a robe and carrying a scythe and an hourglass or other timekeeping device (which represents time's constant one-way movement, and more generally and abstractly, entropy).

WORLD MYTHOLOGY

SANSKRIT
MYTHOLOGY
  • Kāla is a word used in Sanskrit to mean "time". It is also the name of a deity, in which sense it is not always distinguishable from kāla, meaning "black". It is often used as one of the various names or forms of Yama.

IN GERMANIC MYTHOLOGY
  • THE NORNS in Norse mythology are female beings who rule the destiny of gods and men. They roughly correspond to other controllers of humans' destiny, such as the Fates, elsewhere in European mythology. Urðr (Old Norse "fate" is one of the Norns in Norse mythology. Along with Verðandi (possibly "happening" or "present”) and Skuld (possibly "debt" or "future") Urðr makes up a trio of Norns that are described as deciding the fates of people.
