KISSING VOCABULARY
WORDS ~ SLANG ~ IDIOMS
THE ORIGIN OF A KISS
Kiss is derived from the Old English cyssan meaning “to touch with the lips" and from the Proto-Germanic kussjan (source also of Old Saxon kussian, Old Norse kyssa, Old Frisian kessa, Middle Dutch cussen, Dutch, Old High German kussen, German küssen, Norwegian and Danish kysse, Swedish kyssa), from kuss-, probably ultimately imitative of the sound. Gothic used kukjan meaning “two persons, to reciprocally kiss, to kiss each other," circa 1300.
A common ku- sound may be found in the Germanic root and Greek kynein "to kiss," Hittite kuwash-anzi "they kiss," Sanskrit cumbati "he kisses." Some languages make a distinction between the kiss of affection and that of erotic love (compare Latin saviari "erotic kiss," vs. osculum, literally "little mouth"). French embrasser "kiss," but literally "embrace," came about in 17c. when the older word baiser (from Latin basiare) acquired an obscene connotation.
The ancestors of the Modern Germans, Dutch, Frisians, Scandinavians, and English had almost the same word for “kiss,” approximately koss (coss). Part of the New Testament in Gothic has come down to us. Gothic is a Germanic language, recorded in the fourth century, and the word for the verb kiss in it is kukjan. As early as 1861, Dutch dialectal kukken surfaced in scholarly work, and somewhat later an almost identical East Frisian form was set in linguistic circulation. So the speakers of the Germanic languages called “kiss” a kuss– (the vowels might differ slightly) or a kukk-. Hittite for “kiss” was kuwaszi, and it resembles Sanskrit ṡvaṡiti “to blow; snort.” Add the Greek is kuneo. The Latin savium, of obscure origin, is designated as an erotic kiss, while osculum goes back to the word for “mouth” (os). Neither is sound-imitative.
Many of the 17th and 18th century dictionaries also provided definitions for some of the racier forms of kissing, defining suavation as "amorous kissing," centuries before the French kiss was defined with the word cataglottism meaning "a thrusting out the tongue in kissing." And then there is miskissing. This word, which is only defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as "improper kissing" is remarkably rare in the canon of English literature. Especially when one considers how common cases of improper kissing have been.
