Defining New Ideas - Dictionary of Creativity, Innovation and Design
Burning the midnight oil with a little Midnight Madness
AND MERAKI
THIS WORD LIST WAS CREATED AROUND
THE CONCEPTS OF: This
MESONOXIAN
Pertains to the hour of midnight.
MERAKI
Greek for an enduring love and passion for our craft and pouring our soul, creativity and love into our work and to which we give an essence of ourselves.
RASTROPHILIOPUSTROCITY
A spontaneous combustion of creative spark that fuels the creation of a new idea which you then take actions in order to produce the idea using your skill and tenacity. This word translates into the concept of CREATIVE FLOW in English.
Are you afraid of the dark?
Most people are in bed asleep by midnight. But not creatives, innovators, artists or night thinkers. All around us there are writers, artists, painters, thinkers, poets, crafters, programmers, designers, musicians and artisans creating, designing, building and thinking in the quiet stillness of a dark night under the inspiring influence of the moon and stars. I will call them simply “creatives” and as a creative myself, I designed this new section for exploring the act of divergent thought and the creation of something in response to what we call “artistic expression.” The reason they find creativity and peak performance in the middle of the night is because their brain chemistry is geared up to allow divergent thought to be freely explored.
Creatives and night thinkers engage in LUCUBRATE (or AOYE in Japanese) creation which means to “burn the midnight oil.” We are inspired by the darkness, the stars and the moon, and the silence of the world sleeping around us. We indulge our curiosity, let our minds wander and dream, we imagine, we create, we produce. Working laboriously through the night, we only stop and pause at the moment of MADRUGADA... the moment at dawn when the night greets the day and the darkness kisses the light. It is only when the SEHER or the morning peeks on the AAFAAQ (horizon) that some of us put away our work and seek rest. But then the others keep the passion going because as the poetically gifted Robert Frost once penned:

Story of Midnight Meraki
Creativity is a wild mind and a disciplined eye and the desire to create is deeply embedded in our souls. When you create something profoundly beautiful you are fueling your soul with energy and life. Albert Einstein once said that the “true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.”
Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun.
Deep reflection, called FAILEAS in Scottish, leads to DIVERGENT thought and that is when you pierce the mundane to find the marvelous or think outside the box. Creatives are LYANS, dreamers, and AUTOTELIC, meaning they are motivated by the deep rewards of creativity, immersion and flow. And they can create work we can describe as ELYSIAN (beautiful, inventive or divinely inspired) from deep within themselves which is perfectly summed up as having HAECCEITY or the essence and individuality.
Standing under the warm umbrella of SUPERUS (celestial sky) we can gaze towards the heavens, known in Latin as CAELESTIS or CAELUM and await breathlessly for the warmth of setting sun to fade in preparation for VESPERUM (evening).
The evening begins with the GLOAMING, which is the moment the sky starts to darken and twilight sets in. It is the moment of OCCASUS when the sun settles down for the night and the moon... called QUMAR in Arabic, FENGARI in Greek, and LUNA in Latin, peeks through the clouds high in the sky.
As the darkness settles in, the rising moon SCINTILLATES (shines brightly) from its resting place. It is transformed into STJERNEKLART - a dark, quiet sky by which the night is filled and illuminated by KUTITAP (glittering and sparkling) TALA (bright stars). They dance like fireflies across the sky in a STELLIFEROUS display (sky abounding with stars.)
As the night draws in, the darkness gets more intense the closer it gets to NOCTE (midnight). We become NOCTIVAGUS or “wanderers of the night.” Between midnight and 3am is the time for our brains to peak and when innovation is born,
We work tirelessly into the NOX, the darkest moments of the night, and are fueled by the energy of the moon and stars. We only start to slow down when slivers of light start to peek through the darkness and the LŪCĪSCIT HŌC draws near (growing light in the sky) and morning is QURBAT (close). The KORMOREBI breaks through (sunlight filtering through the leaves of the trees) and we pause with a hot cup of coffee to welcome the sun back into the ARSH (sky) during SOLIS ORTUS or what’s known as the sunrise.
As the AURORA or DILUCULO breaks (dawn) we take the last sips of coffee as our eyes grow tired and we begin feeling SOMNOLENT (drowsy) enough for sleep. Before we prepare to rest we watch the last beams of the QAMAR (moon) fade away and the brightest light (INARA) of the sun take its place, we pack it up for the night (RAINA) happy with our work and ready to bid the world OYASUMI (sleep well) and farewell, FELAN (for the time being), until it is time to start again.
