BREAK OUT OF THE BOX

MODES OF THOUGHT

SEE ALSO >> BREAK OUT OF THE BOX PART I

DIVERGENT THOUGHT refers to the ability to generate creative ideas by exploring many possible solutions in an effort to find one that works. Typically, it occurs in a spontaneous, free-flowing, "non-linear" manner, such that many ideas are generated in an emergent cognitive fashion. It involves bringing facts and data together from various sources and then applying logic and knowledge to solve problems or make decisions. It starts from a common point and moves outward in diverging directions to involve a variety of aspects or perspectives.

Divergent thinking is your right brain (the emotional, artistic and creative side) and it’s responsible for the question WHY. Let’s call him CHAOS. Divergency involves the creative generation concepts and ideas that provide multiple answers to the question WHY. Think of a flowing stream. Other terms for divergent thinking are “flexible thinking” or “fluid intelligence.” Flexibility and fluidity are the key to triggering answers to flow. Many possible solutions can be explored in a short amount of time and unexpected connections are drawn. When we have the answers to WHY then we need the answer to it’s twin, the question of HOW. Divergent thinking may throw his hands up after stressing over this question and say $@$@&!)!?!!

CONVERGENT THINKING sweeps in from his corner office over in the left brain. He has been doing math with feverish delight. Let’s call him ORDER. His job is to help shoot for a single, correct solution to the HOW question. He’s your logical, rational thinking. After divergency has been completed, convergence formulates the process flow for the execution of ideas. He organizes and structures the ideas and produces solutions by calculating and analyzing with logic and reasoning. He brings order by reducing the high volume of ideas created through divergent thinking to a small group of the most efficient ideas or one single idea that is logical to pursue. One logical solution.

When divergent and convergent thought come together you are THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX.

This mode is called LATERAL THOUGHT.

LATERAL THINKING (using both logic and imagination). This type of thinking is commonly referred to as “thinking outside the box.” It involves solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, using reasoning that is not immediately obvious and involving ideas that may not be obtainable by using only traditional step-by-step logic. To understand lateral thinking, it is necessary to compare convergent and divergent thinking and build a working relationship between the two types.

These three modes are the top contenders but we do have other modes of thought that both blend in with the top 3 and stand alone.
OTHER MODES OF THOUGHT

ABSTRACT THINKING – refers to the ability to use concepts to make and understand generalizations then relating or connecting them to others items, events, or experiences. It involves paying attention to the hidden meanings thus allowing you to observe and understand theories and possibilities.

ANALYTICAL THINKING – refers to the ability to separate a whole into its basic parts in order to examine the parts and their relationships. It involves thinking in a logical, step-by-step manner to break down a larger system of information into its parts.

ASSOCIATIVE THINKING - is a free flow of thinking in an undirected manner. You give wings to your imagination and let it flow. This is a non-directed, non-targeted mode of thinking, in which you allow your mind to associate thoughts along different lines and allow building new-neural-connections in your brain to trigger new possibilities. There is a difference between aimless wanderers and associative thinkers. The aimless wanderer doesn’t intend to derive any benefit from his thinking, whereas people using associative thinking do it purposefully to tap into the unconscious. It looks for the deeper thoughts etched in the long-term memories of the brain and then connects everything to bring creative solutions to problems.

CREATIVE THINKING – refers to the ability to conceive new and innovative ideas by breaking from established thoughts, theories, rules, and procedures. It involves putting things together in new and imaginative ways. Creative thinking is often referred to as “thinking outside the box.” It is a formulation of a new concept, or it could involve using sudden insights or sparks of intuition to enhance experimentation in real-life situations. This type of thinking is possible for those who don’t want to limit themselves to logic or reason. Creative thinking is vast and could entail wandering in any direction to acquire new ideas and thoughts.

CONCRETE THINKING – also known as perceptual thinking, it refers to the ability to comprehend and apply factual knowledge. It is about thinking of objects or ideas as specific items, rather than a theoretical representation of a more general concept. It involves thinking only on the surface, always literal, and to-the-point.

CRITICAL THINKING – refers to the ability to exercise careful evaluation or judgment in order to determine the authenticity, accuracy, worth, validity, or value of something. In addition to precise, objective analysis, critical thinking involves synthesis, evaluation, reflection, and reconstruction. Critical thinking explores other elements that could have an influence on conclusions. This mode of thinking is all about stepping aside from personal beliefs, presumptions, prejudices, and opinions to sort out your thoughts, discover truths and solve problems. This thinking requires a higher cognitive thinking skill. A critical thinker examines any proposal through the lens of “what could go wrong with this proposal?” and then finds the arguments or solutions to address the challenges that could arise in future.

DESIGN THINKING refers to the creative, cognitive, strategic and practical processes by which design concepts (ideas) are developed into innovative products and services by designers. Design thinking encompasses processes such as context analysis, problem finding and framing, ideation and solution generating, creative thinking, sketching and drawing, modeling and prototyping, testing and evaluating.

HOLISTIC (NONLINEAR) THINKING – refers to the ability to see the big picture and recognize the interconnectedness of various components that form the larger system. It involves expanding your thought process in multiple directions, rather than in just one direction, and understanding a system by sensing its patterns.

REFLECTIVE THINKING - refers to a process of thinking that involves a deep reflection of past experiences, and one’s knowledge and skills. It is used for solving complex problems. In this process, you arrange your experiences about a particular situation, your skillset and all relevant facts related to the problem in a logical order and then reflect on the situation holistically.

SEQUENTIAL (LINEAR) THINKING – refers to the ability to process information in orderly prescribed manner. It involves a step-by-step progression where a response to a step must be obtained before another step is taken.
