OBSESSIONS and MANIA


​This word list explores one very important role - the function that has the ability to deeply impact the whole. It is the motivational and of the brain where the elements of obsessive or manic behavior can manifest. The manifestation of obsessive thought begins simply with arousal from the first encounter with a stimulus (something or someone) that triggers the release of the “feel good” chemical dopamine. Dopamine is a powerful reward for the brain and is the chemical responsible for embedding the addiction pathways straight to the motivational center. Some drugs - like cocaine - create the addiction pathways from the first encounter. Others generally take longer. This pathway enables the vehicle of desire to kickstart the engine and get on the road. Every encounter drives desire to seek out the dopamine enriched reward through the arousal at the stimulus. The perfect example is sex. At first the seeking process is normal. But over time one can start raising the bar. What was once normal becomes maladaptive and as the behavior learns and adapts, it evolves. There are actionable steps to raise the bar and that would be in acquiring knowledge and applying knowledge to experimentation. From there a desire becomes a belief and that belief can turn desire into an obsessive need. By applying motivational functions to empower the seeking of this need, actions and behaviors become compulsory. Any sensory inputs that trigger this compulsive drive become the focus of conscious thought and the person will end up creating a “one track mind.” All that matters is meeting that need so the impact is felt in all areas of life. It goes beyond the original reward and in some cases, the reward - the end result - begins to fade away and the reward shifts into the actual obsessive compulsive behavior itself that drives the need. Simply stated, the person is no longer driven to have a sexual encounter, they seek the challenge. And in terms of fetish obsessions, vanilla sex is never the reward. The brain finds arousal to be more powerful in seeking to go beyond societal norms and seek to fill deviant needs that may have originally been controlled by morality. Obsessions take on the same properties as mania. Manic motivation means the maladaptive behaviors contribute to a mental issue and it’s driven by a chemical imbalance. On the surface level of the brain, this reaction is no different than an addiction to cocaine.

Kleptomania - irrational predilection for stealing
Necromania - sexual obsession with dead bodies. Also known as necrophilia
Nymphomania - excessive or crazed sexual desire. Also, andromania, cytheromania or hysteromania
Paraphilia - any abnormal sexual attraction
Peotillomania - abnormal compulsion for pulling on the penis
Philopornist - lover of prostitutes
Pornomania - obsession with pornography
Satyromania - abnormally high male sexual pppdesire. Also, satyriasis
Scopophilia - obtaining sexual pleasure from visuals
Stupefacient - effects of a narcotic; stupefying
Surfactant - substance which reduces surface tension
Syphilomania - pathological belief that one is afflicted with syphilis
Venery - pursuit of sexual gratification; hunting; pursuit of game

Kef - state of dreamy or drug-induced repose
Methomania - obsession with getting drunk
Narcomania - uncontrollable need for narcotics
Oenomania - obsession or craze for wine
Opiomania - craving for opium
Pharmacomania - abnormal obsession with trying recreational drugs
Phagomania - excessive gluttony; obsessive
desire for food

Aboulomania - pathological indecisiveness
Clinomania - excessive desire to stay in bed
Egomania - irrational self-centered attitude or self-worship
Enosimania - pathological belief that one has sinned
Hylomania - excessive tendency towards materialism
Lypemania - extreme pathological mournfulness
Megalomania - abnormal tendency towards grandiose behaviour
Mythomania - lying or exaggerating to an abnormal extent
Oniomania - mania for excessive purchasing
Pseudomania - irrational predilection for lying
Plutomania - obsessive need for for money
Polemomania - manic attraction to wars
Politicomania - obsession with politico
Sitiomania - morbid aversion tofood
Squandermania - irrational propensity for spending money wastefully

DELUSIONAL THOUGHTS
Cacodemomania - pathological belief that one is inhabited by an evil spirit
Demonomania - pathological belief that one is possessed
Entheomania - delusional belief that one divinely inspired
Habromania - insane and delusional
Hieromania - pathological religious visions or delusions
Macromania - delusion that objects are larger than natural size
Micromania - pathological self-deprecation or belief that one is very small
Nosomania - delusion of suffering from a disease
Parousiamania - obsession with the second coming of Christ
Pathomania - moral insanity
Polymania - mania affecting several different mental faculties
Pyromania - intense desire for starting fires
Sebastomania - religious insanity
Sophomania - delusion that one is incredibly intelligent
Thanatomania - delusional belief that one has been affected by death magic
Theomania - delusional belief that one is a god pot
Toxicomania - delusional craving for poisons
Sebastomania - delusions with religious insanity
Uranomania - obsession with the idea of divinity
