GLITZY GLAMOUR & GLORIFICATION
PIRATE ROMANTICIZING
To create a pirate archetype that dulls the real barbaric acts of murder and torture in order to present pirates as fun, harmless or sexy is denying reality and distorting history in order to glamorize it. Glamorization in entertainment misses the point of pirating.
Pirates existed because they defied the government who exploited them as profiteers in the first place. Profiteers made money for the “Man.” When the Man turned on them, pirates went rogue to make their own money in the only way they could. They are the epitome of the first nonconformists to “stick it to the Man.”
Hollywood has gone above and beyond to exploit pirates in their quest for riches that they have become “The Man.”
And in doing so they have exploited the very honorable tradition of storytelling by manufacturing content to fit the mold they created that maximizes profit. The art of storytelling has been exploited by the revenue streams that flow from it. And it was done in a way that has manipulated the public with dazzling entertainment to fill their coffers with booty made from characters in stories that were invented - not told. And by doing that, they have fabricated the archetype of a “pirate.”
The distortions are loosely based on a concept or idea of a pirate while irresponsibly distorting the reality of what a pirate really was. The public has been dazzled by this archetype enough to believe that the language and words presented in this list are real and the glamorous characters they see are based on real pirates.
Without doing research, what the archetype has become is a fabricated invention by the Man for profit and everything that flows from it into our collective knowledge and understanding. It has glorified pirates by erasing the truth of brutality, torture, rape, murder, human trafficking, government exploitation. The idea that there were harmless pirates of the Caribbean in the 17th century creates an implication of safety.
In doing so, it perpetuates the idea that pirates are long-lost harmless characters from a bygone era. This minimizes the fact that pirates exist today and they operate the same way. The better definition is terrorist and they operate as part of a multi-million dollar operation in international waters with no jurisdiction or laws to control them as they haul in booty for the corporate “Man.”
And they are not the only ones. Pirates online hijack governments and corporations in order to collect booty in the form of a ransom. We know them as hackers but they are cyber pirates and the most recent hijacking of the gas pipeline in the US is an example of an attack that directly affected the American economy and impacted everyone who relied on the pipeline. They jacked up prices and denied services that affected lives and livelihoods. Pirates today steal from us directly through the goods and services we rely on. Hijacked and looted ships carrying goods that we need - like medicine - means shorter supplies and increased prices. Governments hijacked online affect major services we rely on for gas, heating, and communications. On a smaller scale, cyber pirates infiltrate the web under the term hacker or scammer and directly steal money and identities and put us all at risk.
Pirates were never harmless or safe back then and they are not safe or harmless now.
Terror on the seas is nothing like the days of pirate ships though. The technology of today means high speed transports, machine guns and satellite communications. The dazzling fiction we see is strictly entertainment but we should look deeper into what we are being told and recognize that the truth is not entertaining and while pirate language and lore is fun, we should remember the reality behind the character.
The truth is not entertaining and the brutality is shocking and finally, the words and phrases are not all real. The lists presented here will give you the fun but fabricated words you need for talk like a Pirate day. But I’ve also included the real lingo formed by maritime and sailing terminology and the terms that were recorded back in the 17th century that reflect pirate life that the pirates actually used. Not glitzy words but they give you a better understanding of that time period.
You can still Talk Like a Pirate on the national holiday. Just pretend you don’t know that it’s really Talk Like the Man Day.

This dictionary is formed from real words and terms used in Golden Age and the jargon for sailors and shipbuilding.
