RAISE THE MAST & SET SAIL
VOCABULARY FOR
The Masts, Sails and Rope

See Part 1: Batten Down the Hatches -The Ships
RIGGING - system of ropes, wires and chains used to support and operate the masts, sails, booms and yards of a ship. Those that are “standing” are fixed, while those that are “running” are used to adjust the yards and sails.

RIG OF A SHIP - set of masts, ropes and sails that makes up the true character of a ship.

ROPE - made of hemp or other materials, spun into yarns and strands and twisted together into cordage. When it is put to use in the rigging it is then called a line, not a rope. If a rope is just coiled up on deck, not being used for anything, then you can call it a rope, not a line.

MAST - large pole (spar) resin above the deck of a ship and supports sails and rigging.

FOREMAST - front mast on a ship or any other sailing vessel.

MAINMAST - middle, primary mast on a ship or any other sailing vessel.

MIZZENMAST - aftermost mast on a ship or any other sailing vessel.

SAIL - large piece of material like cloth, set on mast and used to speed up sailing by being placed in the wind.

  • SQUARE SAIL - rectangular sail attached on the yard, hanging symmetrically across the mast.
  • FORE-AND-AFT SAIL - triangular sail set behind mast, attached to a gaff and boom, parallel with a keel.
  • LATEEN SAIL - triangular sail, set on a long yard and sometimes supported with the boom.
  • JIB - small fore-and-aft sail extending from the fore-topmast head to the jib-boom.
  • TRYSAIL - small fore-and-aft sail used during the storm conditions and placed instead of the regular sail.
  • COURSE SAIL - largest and lowest square sail on a mast
  • SPANKER - fore-and-aft sail on an aftermost mast, bent with a gaff and boom.

RIGGING THE SAILS

ALOFT - top part of the masts and rigging.

BALLAST - any heavy material used to stabilize a ship or airship,

BELAY - secure or make fast (a rope, for example) by winding on a cleat or pin. To stop, most often used as a command.

BELAYING PIN - wooden rod sitting in a hole on the rail that a rope can be tied to temporarily. A useful improvised weapon aboard a sailing ship because they’re everywhere and just right for a club.

BOOM - long spar extending from the mast to extend the foot of a sail. Also the sound a cannon makes when fired at the enemy.

BOWSPRIT - slanted spar that sticks out over the bow of the ship and is used to support the fore-mast and spread the forestay sail.

BELAY - secure or make fast (a rope, for example) by winding on a cleat or pin.To stop, most often used as a command.

FATHOM - full reach of a man with arms extended. A measure of six feet used to mark the depth of water using a lead or sounding line.

FURL - to roll up and secure. Usually referring to the sails.

GAFF - A swinging pole used to extend the top of a fore-and-aft sail away from a mast and support it.

HALYARD - a line used to hoist a sail, spar, or flag

JACOB'S LADDER - rope ladder that was used to climb aboard ships

JURY-RIGGED - ship fitted with temporary rigging, masts or sails when an accident or attack has damaged the proper rig.

KNOT - measure of the ship’s speed made by counting the knots on a log-line paid out to a float for thirty seconds. A ship travelling at 8 knots is moving 8 nautical miles an hour.

LANYARD - short rope or cord used for hanging or securing something.

LINE - rope used as part of the ship's rigging, or as a towing line.

LOG-LINE - knotted length of line with a piece of wood at the end which is thrown into the water to determine how many "knots" run out in thirty seconds.

MARLINSPIKE - iron pointed tool used to separate the strands of a rope for splicing

MAKE FAST - tying or securing ropes. Fast is usually used in the sense of “fasten” on ship.

MIZZEN - 3rd mast from the ship’s bow of bigger ships

OAKUM - remains of old ropes that have become untwisted or picked to pieces, sometimes called “tow”. This material was often used to stuff into cracks in the ship’s hull with tar to seal it from water.

PAINTER - rope attached to the bows of a boat, used for making her fast.

REEF SAILS - to shorten the sails by partially tying them up, either to slow the ship or to keep a strong wind from putting too much strain on the masts.

RATLINE - horizontal lines run along the shrouds to form a ladder for the crew to use in getting up into the rigging.
