​Amygdala - an almond-shaped neural structure in the anterior part of the temporal lobe of the cerebrum; intimately connected with the hypothalamus and the hippocampus and the cingulate gyrus; as part of the limbic system it plays an important role in motivation and emotional behavior

Cognition - the psychological result of perception and reasoning

Culture - all the knowledge and values shared by a society

Debriefing - a meeting in which someone reports on a mission or task

Dependent variable - a quantity whose value depends on another quantity

Displacement - the act of taking the position of another

Groupthink - decision making by a group

Heuristic - a commonsense rule to help solve some problem

Hypothesis - a tentative insight that is not yet verified or tested

Independent variable - a value that does not depend on changes in other values

Individualism - the quality of being a single thing or person

Informed consent - consent by a patient to undergo a medical or surgical treatment or to participate in an experiment after the patient understands the risks involved

Lobotomy - surgery on nerves to and from the frontal lobe of the brain

Memory - the cognitive process whereby past experience is remembered

Natural selection - a process in which organisms evolve to adapt to environment

Normal distribution - a theoretical distribution with finite mean and variance

Phobia - an anxiety disorder characterized by irrational fear

Priming - the act of making something ready

Proximity - the property of being close together

Random sampling - the selection of a random sample

Tranquilizer - used to treat psychotic conditions when a calming effect is desired
