BELIEF SYSTEMS
KEY TERMS
SPIRITUAL - relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.
THEISM - belief in the existence of a god or divine powers. It is sometimes contrasted with deism or with pantheism and refers either to the active involvement of God in the world or to the separation of God from his creation.
- CREATIONISM - belief that humans, life, the Earth, and the Universe were created by the supernatural intervention of a supreme being or deity. This intervention may be seen either as an act of creation from nothing (ex nihilo) or the emergence of order from pre-existing chaos.
DARWINISM - belief of biological evolution developed by Darwin that states all species arise and develop through natural selection and the individual's ability to compete, survive, and reproduce.
HUMANISM - belief that focuses on human concerns as opposed to the interests of the gods.
- SECULARISM - belief that gods and purely spiritual entities do not exist.
QUIETISM - belief of enlightenment through mental tranquility
MYSTICISM - any belief in the existence and validity of a cognitive power above and beyond reason or perception – (usually intuition that enables insight into god, values, or the nature of the universe.)
BELIEF SYSTEMS
Acosmism - disbelief in existence of eternal universe distinct from God
Adevism - denial of gods of mythology and legend
Adoptionism - belief that Christ was the adopted and not natural son of God
Agnosticism - belief that the existence of God, gods, or deities, is unknown, inherently unknowable, or incoherent, and therefore irrelevant to life.
Asceticism - belief that self-denial of the body permits spiritual enlightenment
Atheism - the absence of belief in the existence of God or gods. This definition includes both those who assert that there are no gods and those who maintain no beliefs at all regarding the existence of gods.
Autosoterism - belief that one can obtain salvation through oneself
Autotheism - belief that one is God incarnate or that one is Christ
Bitheism - belief in two gods
Collegialism - belief that church is independent from the state
Cosmotheism - belief that identifies God with the cosmos
Deism - belief that God created the universe but then left it alone to operate on its own principles – principles that human reason and scientific inquiry can discover. God is not involved in the day-to-day workings of the universe and there are no miracles.
Diphysitism - belief in the dual nature of Christ
Ditheism - belief in two equal gods, one good and one evil
Ditheletism - belief that Christ had two wills
Eidolism - belief in ghosts
Fallibilism - belief that all human beings are liable to error. It usually refers only to the doctrine that human beings cannot know the mind of God.
Fideism - belief that knowledge depends on faith over reason
Gymnobiblism - belief that the Bible can be presented to unlearned without commentary
Henotheism - belief in one tribal god, but not as the only god
Hylopathism - belief in ability of matter to affect the spiritual world
Illuminism - belief in an inward spiritual light
Immanentism - belief in an immanent or permanent god
Indifferentism - the belief that all religions are equally valid
Infinitism - belief that god or the universe are infinite
Irreligionism - system of belief that is hostile to religions
Kathenotheism - polytheism in which each god is considered single and supreme
Kenotism - belief that christ rid himself of divinity in becoming human
Legalism - belief that salvation depends on strict adherence to the law
Messianism - belief in a single messiah or savior
Modalism - belief in unity of father, son and holy spirit
Monergism - belief that the holy spirit alone can act
Monophysitism - belief that christ was primarily divine but in human form
Monopsychism - belief that individuals have a single eternal soul
Monotheism - belief in only one god
Monotheletism - belief that christ had only one will
Mortalism - belief that the soul is mortal
Mysticism - any belief in the existence and validity of a cognitive power above and beyond reason or perception – (usually intuition that enables insight into god, values, or the nature of the universe.)
Nullibilism - denial that the soul exists in space
Numenism - belief in local deities or spirits
Omnism - belief in all religions
Panentheism - belief that world is part but not all of God’s being
Panpsychism - belief that all nature has a psychic side
Panzoism - belief that humans and animals share vital life energy
Personalism - belief that humans possess spiritual freedom
Polytheism - belief in multiple deities
Psilanthropism - denial of Christ's divinity
Psychism - belief in universal soul
Psychopannychism belief souls sleep from death to resurrection
Psychotheism - belief that God is a purely spiritual entity
Sacerdotalism - belief that priests are necessary mediators between God and mankind
Solifidianism - belief that faith alone will ensure salvation
Synergism - belief that human will and divine spirit cooperate in salvation
Terminism - belief that there is a time limit for repentance
Theism - belief in the existence of God without special revelation
Theocentrism - belief that God is central fact of existence
Theopantism - belief that God is the only reality
Theopsychism - belief that the soul is of a divine nature
Thnetopsychism - belief that the soul dies with the body, to be reborn on day of judgement
Tolerationism - belief of toleration of religious differences
Transmigrationism - belief that soul passes into other body at death
Trialism - belief that humans have three separate essences (body, soul, spirit)
Tritheism - belief that the members of the Trinity are separate gods
Triumphalism - belief in the superiority of one particular religious creed
Ubiquitarianism - belief that Christ is everywhere
Universalism - belief in universal salvation
Vitalism - the belief that there is a vital force behind life
Zoomorphism - conception of a god or man in animal form
Zootheism - attribution of divine qualities to animals
