SHAKESPEAREAN FAILS
words coined that never got a chance… but as Shakespeare wrote in King Lear
”nothing will come of nothing
we must dare mighty things…”
1) Dispunge (Antony and Cleopatra)
This is a metaphor for pouring rain.
“the poisonous damp of night dispunge upon me”
2)
Co-mart (Hamlet)
This word described joint bargains and was later replaced in most modern versions of Hamlet with “covenant.”
3)
Congreeted (Henry V)
This verb means to exchange hellos and other small-talk pleasantries.
4)
Smilets (King Lear)
This word describes the half-smile for when you are melancholy but putting on a “brave face.”
5
Friended (Hamlet)
This is not a Facebook construct. The context in Hamlet actually means friendship (“to express his love and friending to you”) — not adding a “friend” to boost your reach. .
6)
Immoment (Antony and Cleopatra)
This is a poetic adjective for “unmomentous,” which is not even a real word.
7)
Bubukles (Henry V)
This describes blotches on the face, or, adult acne.
8)
Rooky (Macbeth)
Some linguists believe it’s just describing a tree crows called rooks like to perch. This line from Macbeth seems to support it: “light thickens; and the crow makes wing to the rooky wood.”
9)
Palmy (Hamlet)
Palmy is an adjective based off the idea that victory is something you hold in your palm. It means “victorious and flourishing.”
10)
Infamonize (Love’s Labor’s Lost)
This word describes someone going from famous to not famous, Maybe being canceled? It borrows its structure from the word “infamous” which makes you think of a notorious cowboy like Billy the Kid.
