This word list is thematic and includes a zombie scenario to illustrate the definitions. If you are sensitive to the current pandemic please skip this one. The scenario is fiction (zombies don’t exist!) but the vocabulary is real. A lot of the words referenced are of Latin origin.

ACER - sharp or piercing; violent, drastic and cruel
ALIMENTUM - Latin for food or nourishment
ANTRUM - a cave or cavern to hide from the zombies.
APOCALYPSE - a great disaster, cataclysmic event or the end of the world.
BELLATOR - warrior or warlike
BLENCH - to draw back from lack of courage.
BIVEM - literally a meeting place for two roads. Figuratively, a crossroads - one road goes to a known safe place but with no guarantee there will be enough food for everyone. The other goes to a better opportunity to grow your own food, but you have to cross the unknown - a dark scary forest full of potential danger. Which way would you go?
BOUNTEOUS -generous and willing to help and give freely in ample quantities. This describes a person who is an asset or resource and friend for you to build rapport with immediately.
CHURLISH - not everyone is gracious and demonstrates manners. Some forget their humanity and act churlishly when they rob you of your food and then run off to selfishly gnaw your hard-to-get deer leg. How edax (gluttonous). Sic your best marketes (badass) on him because he doesn’t understand misericordia (compassion.)
CODDIWOMPLE - to travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination. For example, heading out determined to find the apocalyptic utopia that is somewhere out there.
COGNOSCENTI - people who have superior knowledge and understanding of a particular field. For example, a tradesman or a farmer.
CRUDESCO - become fierce or savage
DECATHECT - to withdraw ones feelings of attachment from an idea or a person, place or thing in anticipation of a future loss. Like coming to terms with having to lose your phone when the power finally goes off for good.
DEFENSOR - defender, guardian or protector
DEINOS - fearsome, awful, powerful or clever. A skillful person. Like the alpha in your Wolfpack. You want to follow him or her - it will keep you safe.
DIALECTICA - logical. It’s not dialectica that zombies will rule the world. Science says there is no life after death. The zombie dialectica says true death only comes with a direct shot to the brain. Make friends with a bellator toxtes with a ton of peritia. (a warrior bowman with experience).
DOUGHTY - steadfast and courageous; resolute and valiant
DYSTOPIA - a society characterized by humor misery, squalor, oppression, disease and overcrowding.
EDAX - Latin for devouring or consuming. Other adjectives denoting meaning are destructive, voracious, greedy or gluttonous.
EMBOSK - to hide or conceal in greenery or foliage. Sometimes you fight - sometimes you hide.
ENSIS - a sword. The local sporting goods outfit probably won’t carry these. But if you come across the house of an aficionado of the action at the local Medieval Times, then grab an ensis or two out of their collection. Make sure they aren’t using it first or you could find it stuck in a body part. A fencer’s house works too.
EUNOIA - this is a tough one. Morality says to practice eunoia - kindness - but don’t ignore your own well-being or the well-being of your pack. Don’t just give away all your shit to be nice. Learn to barter and trade and to do it with eunoia by smiling and minding your manners and saying “thank you.”
EXSOMNIS - wakeful vigilance. This means taking turns to guard the pack during the night, being smart when bartering with strangers, and always keeping an eye on the road ahead.
EXSUL - Latin for exile. Exiled people have been thrown out for a reason. They got kicked out of their pack for something wretched and you need to practice exsomnis when they come sniffing around your campfire.
FATUM - Fate or destiny. Your destiny is to survive. That’s it.
FAVILLA - ashes or embers. Literally the ashes or embers from the spit cooking up your Spam. Figuratively, the ashes of a decaying (dystopian) society.
FERITAS - wild or savage. Not everyone can follow and alpha and be a team player. Some can’t handle the stress so they breakdown mentally and they can go feritas. They become savages. Be wary.
FEROX - wild and warlike. Bold, cruel and defiant. These are the ones you hide from.
GOOMBAH -an older friend or acquaintance who looks out for you, protects you and makes sure you eat or sleep. Sounds like a mom.
GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG - a collapse of a society or regime marked by catastrophic violence and disorder; broadly, it means downfall. German, meaning literally, “twilight of the gods,” from the word ‘Götter’ plural of Gott meaning “god” + ‘Dämmerung’ meaning “twilight.”
HECTOR - to intimidate or harass. Marauders again. They are bullies and thugs and will pull this on you. It’s part of the rules from their alpha. You know, the Boss. He’s the alpha of his posse or street gang with blood in their name and all over their hands.
HEIMAT - a place that you can call home. For awhile. When you find one - practice exsomnis. You can’t let your guard down while there is no law and order or deeds to homesteads.
HERBIFER - a collection of plants or grasses with medicinal properties. Make friends with a botanist, farmer, camper or hunter. If you can’t find any of these then find a Boy Scout, gardening grandma or a Vegan. The stripped down Walgreens can’t help you anymore but anyone who knows this magic can save you before you turn.
IBRAT - an incident that teaches a lesson. Everything in a wild, wild world can teach you a lesson.
IMMUNE - to shut in to confine; staying away from others to prevent the spread of disease. Shelter in place for as long as you can.
INCUNABULA - the earliest stages of the apocalypse. Just after the meteor falls, the EMP hits or the undead begin to rise. Early preparation means a better chance. If you are a prepper then you are ready. If your fridge has beer and ketchup packets then pack up the beer and go find yourself a wolf pack before they institute martial law.
INDOCTUS - the uneducated, ignorant or untrained. These people go down first in the zombie apocalypse.
INELUCTABLE - not to be avoided or changed. You can’t practice avoidance in the apocalypse- if you do you won’t make it.
INEXPUGNABILIS - impregnable or invincible.
INIMICAL- reflecting or indicating hostility. It’s warfare folks. Encountering hostility is a given when the decaying world stops spinning. Everyone is angry.
INTERRITUS - fearless. This could be good or bad. He could be a badass who laughs at danger but always emerges victoriously. Or it could be a dumbass who gets himself eaten by cannibals. Know the difference.
KATHODOS - a descent, journey down then a return. It’s a cycle of destruction to rebirth. Literally it means “road down.” What falls down can always rise back up.
KRAIPALAO - when you discover a hidden stock of moonshine and you and your pack get kraipalao (intoxicated) and the next day wake up kraipalao (hungover). This word has dual meaning depending on context - this is a deictic word. Watch your lakhos of moonshine - it will make you feel moribund (like death).
LAKHOS - an allotment, your share or part. If you work the fields, work the homestead or help others work then you receive a lakhos of Spam at dinner.
LYKOPHRON - wolf minded. Wolves are pack animals and they have an hierarchy. There is an alpha (leader) a beta (his right hand) and then the pack. This kind of thinking should be considered when facing disaster. Get in a group - survive together.
MAKETES - a warrior or fighter. The stem of the word is the Latin ‘mache’ meaning “battle.”
MISERICORDIA - pity, pathos or compassion. A part of your morality you should never lose. You don’t want to go savage.
MORIBUND - in a dying state, near death.
NATSUKASHII - bringing back happy memories like being safe and secure at home instead of running from place to place to hide from marauders.
NAUFRAIGIUM - Latin for shipwreck or ruin. It can be a literal ship or just a euphemism reflecting on the state of society.
NEMESISM - frustration, anger or aggression turned inwards towards oneself and one’s way of living. Like being angry at yourself for not spending the money to stockpile and that savings turns out to be useless and you have no food.
NEPENTHE - something that can make you forget suffering. Friendship, family and love can be vital to keeping you alive because you have something to fight for.
NOCTIVAGUS - night wandering. Like when you break away and run off into the woods by yourself to think. Not the best idea.
NOVATURIENT - seeking powerful change in life, your behavior or situation. This can describe seeking a new home or changing yourself by becoming more self reliant.
NUDUS - Latin literally meaning “naked”, figuratively meaning “bare, destitute and unarmed.”
OCCASUS - literally “sun setting”. Figuratively, the end, ruins, or death.
ONUS - a burden, obligation or blame. The alpha has onus and that guy who screws up all the time has it too. Both for separate reasons. Another deictic word.
OPEROSE - refers to heavy labor to get what you need. Like building shelters or growing food.
OPERTUS - hidden or obscure; in secret. Hiding from zombies? Stay quiet.
OPIFEX - craftsman, artisan or creator. A perfect example of an opifex is a blacksmith.
OPPIDULUM - Latin meaning “small town”. The one you escape the big city for.
OPS - Latin for power, might, strength and ability.
PERNIX - means traveling quickly; nimble and agile. Especially helpful when dodging the undead.
PERITIA - experience, skill, or practical knowledge. Vital to the survival of the species. Old timers have peritia. Listen to them.
PRAEVIDEO - not a prayer video. It means to foresee or to see in advance. Forward thinking will help save your life. Learn to observe, think and make projections.
PYRRHIC VICTORY - a hollow victory. The victor may have won but at what cost?
QUIES - Latin meaning to rest. How much quies can one get in the wild?
RAPTUM - Latin meaning to plunder or prey. Gangs of thugs, marauders, sociopaths or rogue soccer moms looking for booze.
REDINTEGRATE - to make whole again; restore or renew. Restoration of a life, society and the world.
REFIGIUM - an area of land that is environmentally ideal for survival after other areas have fallen. For example, nutrient rich farmland close to a natural water source.
REVERA - reality, real or in fact. This word list is our language but it does not reflect our reality. Zombies don’t exist. Yet. But it is good prep.
SANGUIS - your blood, your family. Further defined as life and vigor.
SHOGANAI - resigning yourself to a situation like coming to terms that there is no more NFL.
